Places of Interest

These are some of the places I have visited whilst enjoying retired life. Most of the places were reached by cruising and flying,. All left a great impression upon me, all places I would like to revisit if time permits.

In Quebec the entrance to the Funiculaire is located inside a shop and the cost of the ride will set you back $2, you can walk up to the Chateau but it is quiet steep.
Boston here you can find statues of the Tortoise and the Hare near to the Cathedral
New York just has everything. The building of the towers to replace the Twin towers was well under way when I visited and I would dearly like to see the finished product.
Athens the path up to the Parthenon is quiet steep and slippery but well worth the effort, care must be taken on the way back down as the marble steps are narrow and deep, it is easy to slip and fall.
Santorini from the dock to the top of the hill and town you have a choice of three modes of transport. You can catch the Cable car at about four euros, ride a Donkey at five euros each way or walk up the 588 steps which are littered with donkey mess. Some of the curves in the steps are of such angles that the steps are very narrow and one side and wide at the other so care has to be taken at these areas.
St Maarten a great place for shopping. This island is split between the Dutch and the French, both sides take the US dollar and the Euro but watch the exchange rate.
Jost Van Dyke a very pretty island in the Caribbean with few inhabitants. To reach the island you have to use a boat from one of the neighbouring islands and getting ashore you will get your feet wet. The beach shelves steeply from ankle deep to shoulder height within a few feet. The beach is lovely and the sea is clear and a beautiful colour. Most boats can not get near enough to allow you to get straight onto the beach so some use a dinghy that they try to beach, the crew hold the dinghy in position to allow you to step onto a stool which is set in the water. With the tide moving the dinghy whilst you clamber over the side to step onto the stool  you still have a few feet to reach dry land, this is not a good idea for the not so mobile. The alternative is to wade ashore with your bags and things hoisted above your head.
